How Many Microphones Can the Behringer UMC404HD Record?

The short answer
The Behringer UMC404HD can record up to four analog microphones at the same time, with each microphone on its own input channel. Behringer describes it as a four-input, four-output USB recording interface with four Midas-designed microphone preamps.
Connect one compatible analog microphone to each of the four front-panel combination inputs, set each channel’s gain, and assign inputs 1 through 4 to separate tracks in recording software. This provides four independently recordable microphone channels over USB, assuming the computer and digital audio workstation, or DAW, are configured to use all four inputs.
Four preamps feed four analog input channels
The front panel has four combination XLR and quarter-inch connectors labeled Input 1 through Input 4. Behringer’s UMC404HD quick-start guide says these connectors accept microphones, instruments, or line-level audio sources. Each channel also has its own gain control, signal indicator, clip indicator, pad switch, and line or instrument selection.
For four microphones, use the XLR side of each combination input:
- Microphone 1 to Input 1
- Microphone 2 to Input 2
- Microphone 3 to Input 3
- Microphone 4 to Input 4
The interface converts those four analog channels and sends them to the computer through USB.
The “4x4” label means four input and four output channels. It does not mean four microphone inputs plus four additional line inputs. The four analog inputs are the complete set of recordable input channels on this interface.
XLR, line, and instrument connections share each input
A combination connector gives one channel more than one connector format. It does not create parallel inputs. The XLR socket and quarter-inch opening on Input 1 both feed channel 1, and the same arrangement applies to the other three channels. Behringer identifies them as four combination XLR/TRS inputs for microphones, instruments, and line-level sources.
If a line source occupies Input 3, only three channels remain for microphones. A stereo keyboard connected to two line inputs leaves two channels for microphones. A guitar connected as an instrument also uses one of the four channels.
The line or instrument switch applies to a quarter-inch source. A microphone connected by XLR uses the microphone preamp path. The pad switch reduces the incoming level for a source that is too strong, while the gain knob sets the input level. Behringer’s control guide says the clip indicator means the channel signal is too loud and instructs the user to lower the corresponding gain until that indicator no longer lights.
Do not connect a USB microphone to an XLR or quarter-inch input by assumption. A USB microphone already contains its own digital interface and normally connects to a computer. Phantom power is shared, not per channel
The UMC404HD provides 48-volt phantom power for condenser microphones. Behringer documents one rear-panel +48 V on/off switch and a front-panel status light. There is no separate phantom switch for each of the four channels.
Check every connected microphone’s instructions before turning phantom power on. Use it only when the connected microphone and cable path support it.
A mixed four-microphone configuration requires more planning than four identical microphones. If one microphone requires phantom power and another manufacturer warns against it, do not assume the shared switch is appropriate for both. Change the microphone selection, use a suitable external power arrangement, or separate the incompatible equipment according to its manufacturer documentation.
Phantom power does not provide another input or make a line-level source into a microphone channel. It supplies power through the documented XLR microphone path while the interface still records a maximum of four analog input channels.
Inserts process channels but do not add inputs
The rear panel has four insert connectors, one for each UMC404HD input channel. Behringer says Inserts 1 through 4 connect external signal-processing devices, and its product page gives compressors, gates, and equalizers as examples.
An insert sends a channel’s signal to an external processor and returns the processed signal to that same channel. It is not a fifth microphone preamp, a fifth line input, or another USB recording channel. Using all four inserts can place processing in all four input paths, but the DAW still receives four channels.
Insert cabling and processor levels must match the documented connection. Do not plug a microphone directly into an insert and expect microphone gain or phantom power.
MIDI input and output also do not carry microphone audio. Behringer documents the MIDI ports for external MIDI controllers and modules. MIDI activity can be recorded alongside audio in a DAW, but it does not consume or create an analog microphone channel.
Configure four separate tracks in the DAW
Connect the UMC404HD’s USB Type-B port to the computer as shown in the official control and connection guide. Install any current software required for the computer from Behringer’s product downloads, then select the UMC404HD as the DAW’s audio input device.
Create four mono audio tracks and assign a different hardware input to each:
- Track 1 receives Input 1.
- Track 2 receives Input 2.
- Track 3 receives Input 3.
- Track 4 receives Input 4.
Arm all four tracks, speak into one microphone at a time, and confirm that only the intended track meter responds. Then test all microphones together. Set gain from the loudest level expected in the session and watch the interface clip indicators as well as the DAW meters.
If the software offers only inputs 1 and 2, check that it selected the UMC404HD rather than a generic stereo computer input. Confirm the current Behringer driver where the operating system requires one, restart the DAW after changing the audio device, and create mono rather than paired stereo tracks. A stereo track can combine two hardware inputs into left and right sides, which makes individual editing less convenient.
The UMC404HD’s Mix control balances direct input and computer playback at the main and headphone monitoring path, according to Behringer’s monitoring control description. Monitoring choices affect what performers hear, not how many inputs the computer can record.
Plan configurations within the four-channel limit
Four direct microphones suit a four-person discussion, a small vocal group, or a compact multi-microphone instrument setup. Other valid arrangements include two microphones plus a stereo line source, three microphones plus one instrument, or one microphone plus three mono line sources. Every source consumes one channel, except a stereo source normally consumes two.
A separate mixer could combine more microphones into one or two line-level outputs before the interface. That may let more physical microphones be heard, but it does not make them separate UMC404HD channels. Sources mixed together before the interface cannot be isolated later in the DAW in the same way as four independently recorded inputs.
Before recording:
- Draw the route for every microphone or line source.
- Keep the total at four analog input channels.
- Check phantom-power requirements across all XLR microphones.
- Set each gain while the source performs at its expected loudest level.
- Verify four separate mono tracks in the DAW.
- Record and play back a short test through headphones.
- Label tracks and cables so input assignments remain clear.
The practical answer is four microphones directly, four analog channels in the DAW, and no extra channels from inserts or shared line connectors.
