The short answer

Normally, you do not need a separate audio interface for a USB microphone. A USB microphone is designed to send audio directly to a computer, and its built-in electronics perform the interface and conversion work needed for that signal. LEWITT’s explanation of audio interfaces specifically identifies USB microphones as devices that use a built-in audio interface.

An external interface becomes useful when your workflow changes. You may need one when moving to a microphone with an analog XLR output, recording several sources through separate inputs, or requiring monitoring and routing controls provided by a particular interface. The exception depends on the microphone’s documented outputs and the recording setup, not simply on whether an interface is available.

Follow the signal path

A USB microphone has a short recording path:

For example, Logitech documents the Blue Yeti as connecting directly to a computer through its included USB cable. The same product documentation lists onboard microphone gain, mute, headphone output, and direct monitoring controls. A separate interface is not part of that documented path.

An XLR microphone uses a different path:

The interface receives the microphone’s analog signal, provides the appropriate input stage, converts that signal to digital audio, and sends it to the computer. LEWITT describes an interface as the bridge that converts signals between analog audio equipment and a computer.

These paths solve the same basic recording problem in different places. A USB microphone handles its own signal. An XLR microphone relies on compatible equipment later in the chain.

When an external interface is useful

You are switching to an XLR microphone

An interface is relevant when the chosen microphone has an analog XLR output and no direct USB path. The microphone, interface input, required power, cable, and computer connection must all be checked as one system.

The Behringer UMC404HD belongs to this type of workflow. Behringer documents combination XLR and TRS inputs for microphones, instruments, and line-level sources, followed by a USB connection from the interface to the computer.

You need several separate inputs

A USB microphone uses its own built-in interface, as LEWITT explains in its interface overview. A separate interface can be useful when several compatible microphones or instruments need their own physical inputs and gain controls. The UMC404HD quick-start guide documents four combination inputs and separate gain controls for that model.

Before building a multi-microphone setup, confirm that the recording software can address the interface inputs in the way the project requires. Do not assume that connecting several independent USB microphones provides the same routing as a multi-input interface.

You need specific monitoring or routing controls

Monitoring needs can also change the decision. Logitech says the Yeti offers latency-free monitoring from its headphone output, so a separate interface is not required just to hear that microphone directly.

An external interface may still make sense when its documented monitor mix, output selection, or routing matches a larger setup. Behringer’s UMC404HD guide describes direct monitoring, input and playback mixing, and alternate monitor outputs. Those are workflow features. They do not establish that placing the interface beside a USB microphone will improve the microphone’s signal.

Do not connect a USB-only microphone to XLR by assumption

USB and XLR are distinct signal paths. Shure’s MV7 guide identifies its USB connection as digital and its XLR output as passive analog. Do not try to route a USB-only microphone into an interface’s XLR input unless the microphone manufacturer documents a separate analog output and the exact connection method.

Some microphones are intentionally built with both paths. The same MV7 guide gives separate instructions for connecting its USB output to a computer and its XLR output to a mixer or interface. That documented hybrid design is different from adapting a USB-only output to XLR.

For the Blue Yeti, follow Logitech’s documented direct USB connection. The Behringer interface is a separate option for compatible analog microphones and sources, not an intermediate device required by the Yeti.

Use this decision checklist

Choose the direct USB path when:

  • The microphone manual tells you to connect it to the computer through USB.
  • You need to record one microphone into a computer application.
  • The microphone’s documented headphone and onboard controls meet your monitoring needs.
  • Your computer has the required port or a manufacturer-supported adapter path.

Consider an external interface when:

  • The microphone has a documented analog XLR output.
  • You need multiple compatible analog sources on separate inputs.
  • You need specific monitor mixes, outputs, or routing that the interface documentation supports.
  • You plan to use other supported analog sources alongside the microphone.

Before buying anything, draw the full path from microphone output to the device that records the file. Check connector type, power requirements, input count, monitoring location, operating-system support, and recording-software input selection against the relevant manuals.
