The short answer

DJI Osmo Pocket 3 supports several external microphone routes. You can link compatible DJI Mic 2 or DJI Mic Mini transmitters directly, connect the original DJI Mic through its receiver, use a third-party digital microphone over USB-C, or use an analog microphone through a 3.5 mm port adapter. DJI confirms these wired and wireless paths in the current Osmo Pocket 3 FAQ.

Choose direct transmitter pairing when a compact wireless setup matters most. Use a receiver when the microphone system requires one or when its controls and outputs suit the job. Choose wired USB-C or an analog adapter when the microphone can remain connected to the camera and radio freedom is unnecessary.

Compatibility should be checked by exact microphone, receiver, cable, and adapter. DJI’s general support for third-party input does not establish that every USB-C microphone or 3.5 mm adapter will work.

Connect DJI Mic 2 transmitters directly

Osmo Pocket 3 can link directly to DJI Mic 2 transmitters without attaching the DJI Mic 2 receiver. On the camera, swipe down, open System Settings, select the wireless microphone option, and enter linking mode. Then put the transmitter into linking mode and follow the camera prompts. DJI provides this process in its Pocket 3 wireless microphone instructions.

DJI says Pocket 3 can connect to two DJI Mic 2 or Mic Mini transmitters at the same time. Two-transmitter support makes a direct setup possible for a two-person conversation, but each transmitter still needs correct placement, charge, and a verified connection. Record a short sample with both people speaking and play it back before the main take.

The DJI Mic 2 transmitter also accepts an external lavalier through its own input, as documented in the Pocket 3 user manual. Check the lavalier’s connector and power requirements against the transmitter documentation rather than assuming any 3.5 mm microphone is suitable.

Use DJI Mic Mini for a lighter direct route

DJI Mic Mini transmitters can also connect directly to Pocket 3. DJI’s Mic Mini FAQ lists Pocket 3 within the OsmoAudio direct-connection ecosystem, and the current Pocket 3 FAQ gives Mic Mini the same camera-menu linking process as Mic 2.

Mic Mini support depends on current camera and transmitter firmware. DJI’s official release notes state that Pocket 3 added Mic Mini support in firmware v01.05.10.01 on November 26, 2024. If a Mic Mini does not appear in the wireless microphone menu, update Pocket 3 through DJI Mimo and update the transmitter according to DJI’s instructions before repeating the link process.

Do not treat Mic Mini as a lower-cost version of Mic 2 with identical backup features. DJI states that the Mic Mini transmitter has no internal storage, so it cannot create an onboard transmitter recording. Its documented safety-track mode is an output-routing feature, not a file stored inside the transmitter.

Connect a receiver or wired microphone through USB-C

The original DJI Mic does not connect directly to Pocket 3. DJI says it must be used with the DJI Mic receiver plugged into the camera. The Pocket 3 manual specifies using the DJI Mic receiver’s USB-C mobile-phone adapter and shows that an input level bar appears after connection.

A DJI Mic 2 receiver can also feed Pocket 3 through USB-C. DJI lists Pocket 3 support for Mic 2 through either its USB-C port or direct Bluetooth connection. The receiver route adds another mounted component and access to the controls documented for that system.

Pocket 3 also accepts third-party microphones through USB-C digital audio. DJI’s manual narrows its documented wired support to digital USB-C microphones that support 48 kHz, 16-bit audio. Confirm that the microphone outputs digital audio in the required format and does not merely use USB-C for charging.

The standard handle and battery handle move the camera’s USB-C connection to the rear and support external audio devices through that port, according to the same Pocket 3 accessory instructions. Check that a plug, receiver, or cable does not obstruct the screen, controls, or gimbal movement.

Use a 3.5 mm adapter without assuming universal compatibility

DJI says Pocket 3 can receive a third-party microphone through a 3.5 mm port adapter. This creates an analog route for a microphone or wireless receiver that does not provide compatible USB-C digital output.

The adapter must carry microphone input into USB-C. A headphone-only adapter or a charging adapter is not automatically suitable. Connector shape does not prove that signal wiring, microphone power, and output level match. DJI does not provide a universal compatibility list in the Pocket 3 FAQ, so verify the microphone and adapter documentation together.

A wired microphone avoids transmitter pairing and radio-link checks, but it adds cable handling. Secure the cable with enough slack for camera movement, keep it away from the gimbal, and avoid transferring handling noise into the microphone. A receiver connected through an analog adapter adds batteries and gain controls at both the receiver and camera, so test the complete path rather than only checking that the plug fits.

Separate onboard recording from safety tracks

Pocket 3 has a Built-in Mic Audio Backup setting that can save the camera’s own microphone audio as a separate WAV file while an external microphone is connected. DJI documents this camera-level backup and its recording-mode limits. This track captures the camera’s position in the scene, so it may sound different from a microphone worn close to the speaker.

DJI Mic 2 offers a separate backup option inside its transmitter. When Audio-to-video Sync is enabled on Pocket 3, the transmitter independently records while the camera records. The Pocket 3 manual also documents an optional 32-bit float transmitter recording mode. These are transmitter files that must be copied and managed after the shoot.

A safety track serves another purpose. DJI documents lower-level Mono Safety Track modes for both DJI Mic 2 and DJI Mic Mini. That can help when a sudden loud source distorts the main level, but it is not automatically independent storage. Confirm whether the chosen direct or receiver route exposes the needed mode on Pocket 3, then inspect the recorded channels in the intended editor.

Set up and troubleshoot before the take

Use a short preflight process for every microphone route:

  1. Update Pocket 3 and any DJI transmitter or receiver through the method in its official documentation.
  2. Connect or link the exact microphone path you intend to record.
  3. Confirm that Pocket 3 shows the external microphone level meter.
  4. Speak at the loudest expected level and adjust external microphone gain where available.
  5. Enable Built-in Mic Audio Backup or Mic 2 independent recording when the chosen mode supports it.
  6. Record a sample, play it back, and confirm both speakers and channels.
  7. Check battery and storage on every device that creates a file.

If there is no level meter, disconnect and reconnect a wired device, confirm the adapter supports microphone input, or repeat wireless linking from System Settings. If Mic Mini is missing, check firmware first. If audio appears on only one side, review the camera’s channel setting and the number of connected transmitters. DJI notes that current firmware duplicates one connected wireless transmitter across both channels when stereo is enabled, a behavior documented in the Pocket 3 release notes.
