The short answer
Choose a wired microphone for desk videos, voiceovers, tutorials, or streams when the speaker stays near the computer. Choose wireless for walk-and-talk videos, demonstrations, interviews, or other on-camera recording where a cable would restrict movement.
The tradeoff is simple: wired replaces radio and battery checks with a physical cable, while wireless gives the speaker more freedom but adds a transmitter, receiver, charging, pairing, and signal checks. Neither type is automatically better for YouTube. The better choice is the one that keeps the microphone close to the speaker and fits the recording device.

Choose wired for a fixed desk or voiceover setup
A USB desk microphone keeps the signal path direct: voice into the microphone, then audio through its USB cable to the computer and recording software. Logitech says the Yeti connects straight to a computer with its included USB cable and does not require a driver.
That setup reduces pre-recording checks because there is no transmitter-receiver pairing or separate radio link. It also avoids charging a wireless transmitter and receiver. The compromise is physical: the cable must reach the computer, remain secure, and stay out of the speaker’s way. A desk microphone is therefore less practical when the presenter needs to walk through a room or appear far from the computer.

Choose wireless for movement and on-camera speech
A wireless system moves the cable break away from the speaker. In the RØDE Wireless ME signal path, the transmitter captures the speaker, sends audio wirelessly to the receiver, and the receiver sends it to a camera, phone, computer, or audio device through USB-C or its 3.5 mm output.
This arrangement suits a presenter who walks, demonstrates a process, turns away from the camera, or needs the camera positioned beyond a practical microphone cable. It also adds more points to check. Both units must be powered and paired, the receiver must be connected to the recording device, and the connection indicator must show that the link is active. RØDE lists built-in rechargeable batteries with up to seven hours of operation, so charging belongs on the shoot checklist rather than being assumed (official Wireless ME product page).
Wireless also relies on a radio link. Treat range claims as best-case specifications, not permission to skip a location test. Keep the receiver and transmitter positioned as instructed, watch their connection status, and record a short sample in the actual location before the full take.
Check monitoring, levels, and safety options
Monitoring means listening while recording so you can catch distortion, clothing noise, disconnection, or an incorrect input before finishing the take.
For a wired example, Logitech says the Yeti provides latency-free monitoring through its headphone output, along with microphone gain and mute controls. That direct output can make a desk workflow easier to verify without listening through software.
For wireless, decide where monitoring will happen before recording. The Wireless ME receiver sends audio onward through USB-C or 3.5 mm, so consult the camera, phone, computer, or recorder documentation to confirm whether that device can monitor the incoming signal. Do not assume a wireless kit creates a backup copy. RØDE’s Wireless ME comparison assigns onboard recording and a safety channel to the Wireless GO II rather than the Wireless ME. If an internal backup or lower-level safety track is required, verify that feature on the exact system before choosing it.
Verify connectors and adapters before buying
Trace the entire route from microphone to the device that saves the file:
- Identify the recording input on the camera, phone, tablet, or computer.
- Match the microphone or receiver output to that input.
- Check whether the required cable carries analog audio or digital USB audio.
- Confirm any phone adapter supports microphone input, not only charging or headphones.
- Verify that the recording app can select the external microphone.
- Plan where the cable or wireless receiver will mount without blocking controls.

A connector that fits physically does not by itself establish the correct signal path, so compare both ends against the official manuals.
Make the decision from the shot
Pick wired when the speaker remains at a desk and a direct computer connection, simple power path, and direct headphone monitoring matter most. Pick wireless when the speaker’s movement or distance from the camera matters more than the added charging, pairing, and signal checks.
