Blue Yeti Pickup Patterns Explained
Learn what the Blue Yeti cardioid, omnidirectional, bidirectional, and stereo modes capture, plus how to place the microphone and set gain.

The short answer
For one person speaking at a desk, start with cardioid. Choose omnidirectional when sound must come from around the microphone, bidirectional for two people facing each other across it, and stereo when left-to-right position is part of what you want to record. The standard Logitech G Yeti provides cardioid, bidirectional, omnidirectional, and stereo polar patterns.
A pickup pattern describes where a microphone is most sensitive. It does not make unwanted sound disappear. The standard Yeti guide shows that each mode changes the microphone’s active directions and suggested recording uses, so pattern choice and physical placement need to work together.
Cardioid: the usual choice for one voice
Cardioid emphasizes sound arriving from the front while reducing pickup from the sides and rear. Logitech’s official Yeti pattern guidance identifies it as the likely choice for vocals, podcasts, and voiceovers.
Use it for a solo YouTube narration, livestream, video call, or spoken podcast. Face the front of the microphone toward the speaker and keep distracting sound sources behind it when practical. Side and rear reduction can help, but it will not erase keyboard noise, room echo, or sound reflected back toward the microphone.
Omnidirectional: sound from around the microphone
Omnidirectional mode picks up sound from all directions. Logitech suggests it for situations such as conference calls and recordings that need the ambience of the room.
Use it when several people surround the microphone or when the surrounding sound is intentional. The tradeoff is that computer fans, hard-room reflections, and other nearby sounds can become more apparent. It is usually a poor fix for a noisy room because the wider pickup is the point of the mode.
Bidirectional: front and rear
Bidirectional mode captures the front and rear while reducing sound from the sides. Logitech describes placing the microphone between subjects with one source facing the front and another facing the rear.
This layout can suit a face-to-face interview. Put the two speakers opposite each other rather than beside each other, then balance their distance from the microphone. Side reduction is useful only when unwanted sources actually sit near the quieter sides, and room reflections can still reach the active front and rear areas.
Stereo: preserve left-to-right position
Stereo mode records a left-to-right image rather than treating the result as one centered pickup pattern. Logitech’s guide recommends aiming the front at the source and explains that moving a source left or right changes its place in the left or right channel.
Use stereo for an instrument, ensemble, or sound scene where width and position matter. It is less useful for a single centered voice that needs consistent placement, especially if the speaker moves. Confirm that the recording software is capturing a stereo input and listen to both channels before committing to a session.
Speak into the side, not the top
The Yeti is a side-address microphone. Speak toward the side carrying the front logo, not down into the rounded grille as though it were a handheld microphone. Logitech’s official guide states that the Blue logo indicates the front.
Angle the microphone so the intended source faces the correct active area for the selected pattern. Start close enough that the wanted voice is clear, while leaving enough room for comfortable movement and forceful sounds. If breath blasts are a problem, move slightly off axis or add a pop filter rather than turning up the gain from farther away.
Set placement before gain
Place and aim the microphone first. The onboard gain control changes microphone sensitivity. Logitech’s standard Yeti guide recommends beginning with the control centered, lowering it if a loud source produces distortion, and raising it when greater sensitivity is needed. Speak at the loudest level expected in the recording, watch the input meter, and lower gain if peaks distort or clip. If the signal is too quiet, first move the microphone closer when practical, then raise gain only as much as needed.
More gain also raises captured background sound and reflections. Changing patterns is therefore not a substitute for quieter placement or basic room treatment. Check which Yeti model you have
These four-mode instructions apply to the standard Yeti listed above. Do not assume that every microphone with Yeti in its name has the same selector. For example, Logitech lists the smaller Yeti Nano with only cardioid and omnidirectional patterns. Read the label and product documentation for the exact model before following a pattern diagram or control guide.
Setup and testing checklist
- Confirm the exact Yeti model and its available patterns.
- Select cardioid for one voice, omni for sound around the mic, bidirectional for front and rear, or stereo for left-to-right width.
- Aim the correct side at the intended source. For standard front-facing use, speak toward the logo side.
- Position the microphone before adjusting gain.
- Record the loudest expected passage and check for clipping.
- Listen on headphones for room echo, fans, keyboard noise, breath blasts, and channel balance.
- Make a short test recording, play it back, and adjust one variable at a time.
