Elgato Prompter and Sony a5100 Compatibility
Check whether Elgato Prompter fits a Sony a5100, which mounting method to use, and what to verify before buying.

The short answer
The Elgato Prompter may work with a Sony a5100, but Elgato does not currently list the a5100 in its official Prompter camera compatibility checker. Treat the combination as unverified rather than guaranteed.
The mounting method depends on the lens. Elgato supplies a ring backplate with step-up rings for lenses whose front threads match its supported sizes, plus a universal shroud backplate and camera bracket for other configurations. However, Elgato’s Prompter quick-start guide warns not to use the ring backplate with motorized lenses.
That warning matters for a common a5100 package. Sony identifies the lens supplied with the ILCE-5100L and ILCE-5100Y kits as the E PZ 16-50 mm F3.5-5.6 OSS. Do not assume that a third-party step-up ring makes that kit lens safe to support Prompter. Ask Elgato to confirm the exact body, lens, and mounting method before purchase.
Why the camera body alone cannot answer compatibility
Prompter mounts around the lens opening, while the camera sits behind its beam-splitter glass. Fit therefore depends on the complete camera and lens combination, not merely the Sony E-mount body.
Elgato’s checker records compatibility by camera model and, for some entries, notes whether the ring or universal backplate works. The current checker contains tested and community-reported configurations, but it does not contain an a5100 entry. Its absence means Elgato has not published a model-specific result there.
Lens behavior matters as well as dimensions. A lens may extend while powering on or zooming, and controls or cables may need room behind the shroud. Elgato instructs users of the universal setup to move the camera forward without letting a protruding lens touch the glass, and its setup guide specifically warns about lenses that extend while zooming.
Choose the ring backplate only for a supported lens
The ring backplate lets Prompter dock to a threaded lens through an included step-up ring. Elgato includes rings for 49, 52, 55, 58, 62, 67, 72, 77, and 82 mm lens threads. The lens cap or lens barrel normally identifies the thread size, but verify it in the lens documentation.
Use this route only when all of the following are true:
- The lens is not motorized.
- Its thread size matches an included Elgato ring.
- Elgato confirms that the lens can support this mounting method.
- The complete camera and lens fit within Prompter’s bracket clearance.
- The tripod or mount supports the combined load.
Elgato’s instructions say to install the ring backplate, screw the matching ring onto the lens, and slide Prompter onto the ring until seated. The official ring-backplate setup also uses the included L-bracket to support a short lens.
Do not solve a thread-size mismatch by stacking adapters without approval. A reducer or step-up ring may join two thread sizes, but that does not establish safe load capacity, glass clearance, or compatibility with a lens that moves. This is especially important for the E PZ kit lens because Elgato’s motorized-lens warning takes priority over whether an adapter can be screwed on.
Treat the universal backplate as a conditional alternative
Elgato describes its universal shroud backplate as the option for cameras and lenses that do not meet the ring-backplate criteria. In that arrangement, the camera attaches to the L-bracket, the lens is centered behind the opening, and the shroud blocks surrounding light. The universal setup sequence keeps Prompter supported by its bracket and tripod connection rather than hanging the display solely from a lens thread.
This appears to be the more cautious mounting concept for a small camera with an extending or motorized lens, but Elgato does not explicitly approve the a5100 for it. Confirm the configuration with Elgato before treating the universal backplate as the answer.
During a dry fit, check that:
- The lens remains centered through its full operating movement.
- The lens cannot contact the Prompter glass.
- The shroud closes without pressing camera controls.
- The camera’s screen, ports, battery door, and card access remain usable where needed.
- The bracket and tripod head stay secure at every planned camera angle.
Do not power or zoom the camera while any part of the lens is close enough to strike the glass.
Check length, load, and field of view
For the standard Prompter, Elgato lists a maximum camera-and-lens length of 11 cm, an 85 mm lens-clearance figure without a backplate, and a 3 kg bracket load limit. Measure the actual a5100 setup in the state used for recording. Do not rely only on a retracted storage length if the lens extends at startup.
Elgato specifies a minimum supported focal length of 20 mm full-frame equivalent with the universal backplate. The Sony a5100 is an APS-C camera, so the focal-length marking on its lens is not directly equivalent to that full-frame figure. Test the assembled setup for dark corners or visible hardware before recording.
Support also includes the tripod head and any accessories attached to Prompter’s cold shoes. Elgato notes that added lights, microphones, or monitors increase system weight and may make the assembly more front-heavy. Its mounting guide recommends checking the tripod head and using additional quarter-inch support points when needed.
Meet the computer and display requirements
Prompter is a computer-driven display. Elgato says the standard model uses one USB connection for power and display data and includes a USB-C to USB-A 3.0 cable. This cable connects Prompter to the computer. It does not replace the camera’s own recording or video-capture path.
Elgato’s current requirements list Windows 11, macOS 13.3 Ventura or newer, or Android 11 or newer. Windows and Mac use Camera Hub, while Android is listed as display only and requires a USB-C to USB-C cable that is not included. The product page also says DisplayLink installs during setup on Mac.
Install Camera Hub on a supported Windows or Mac computer, connect Prompter directly to a USB 3.0 port, and configure it as an extended display rather than mirroring when the setup calls for a separate script screen. Elgato’s first-time instructions identify Camera Hub as the software for Prompter scripts and display features.
The Sony a5100 remains a separate camera in this arrangement. If the production needs a live camera image on the computer, verify the camera output and capture workflow independently. Mechanical fit with Prompter does not establish computer capture compatibility.
Follow a pre-purchase and setup checklist
- Confirm that the body is Sony ILCE-5100 and record the exact attached lens model.
- Check Elgato’s compatibility checker again for a newly added a5100 entry.
- Ask Elgato whether the exact lens is approved for the ring or universal backplate.
- Avoid the ring backplate if the lens is motorized.
- Compare the complete operating length and weight with Elgato’s published limits.
- Confirm glass clearance throughout startup, focus, and zoom movement.
- Verify that the tripod head supports the centered, fully assembled load.
- Check the computer operating system, USB port, cable, and Camera Hub requirements.
- Dry-fit the equipment before a deadline and inspect the recorded frame for obstructions.
- Keep the camera capture path separate from Prompter’s display connection.
The most defensible answer is conditional: Prompter is designed for mirrorless cameras, but the Sony a5100 is not explicitly verified by Elgato, and its common E PZ kit lens needs special caution. Use a confirmed non-motorized lens with an included ring size, or obtain Elgato’s approval for a universal-bracket arrangement before buying adapters.
